Michigan's 4th Congressional District

Michigan's 4th congressional district includes all of Clare, Grand Traverse, Gratiot, Isabella, Kalkaska, Leelanau, Mecosta, Midland, Missaukee, Montcalm, Osceola, and Roscommon counties and the northern portion of Shiawassee and most of the western portion of Saginaw counties.

The 4th district has had a Republican representative sitting in Congress since the 1970's.

The major cities found in the 4th include Alma, Big Rapids, Midland, Mount Pleasant, and Owosso  The largest townships are Bridgeport, Saginaw, and Thomas.

In 2014, former Republican state senator John Moolenaar replaced Dave Camp, another Midland native who served as the United States House of Representative for Michigan 4th district since 1991.

On June 22, 2016, attorney Debra F. Wirth, a Clinton County Democrat, announced she plans to run against Congressman Moolenaar as a write in candidate for the 4th Congressional District in Michigan's August 2, primary.

You may know the name because in 2012 Wirth ran against Dave Camp for the same position he held for more than two decades.

Wirth needed 1600 primary votes from the 14 counties on August 2, 2016 in order to be placed on the November 8th ballot.  She received almost 4000!   That's two-and-a-half times the support necessary to oppose incumbant Congreeman John Moolenaar in the 2016 general election.

What's even more impressive is the fact that almost a quarter (23.7%) of the votes necessary to be placed on the 4th Congressional District ballot were cast in Midland County – Mr. Moolenaar's very own conservative home turf.

Debra Wirth grew up in Eaton County. She graduated from Waverly High School in 1970, and Michigan State University in 1974. In 1977 she began practicing law and worked as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney in Ingham County. After living in Missouri from 1983 to 2009, Wirth returned to Michigan and married her husband, Steve Wirth in 2011. They live in Clinton County.
